April 5 – 11, 2009 is National Cell Phone Recycling Week!

This is a joint effort between EPA's Plug-In To eCycling program and leading cell phone manufacturers, retailers and service providers to increase national awareness about the importance of cell phone recycling. People can participate in this national event by donating or recycling their unwanted cell phones, PDAs and their accessories. Last year's "Recycle your Cell Phone, It's an Easy Call"campaign was a huge success, with Plug-In Partners collecting more than 11 million phones for reuse and recycling throughout 2008.

Information for personally-owned cell phones

EPA's web site provides great resources for determining where to recycle your used cell phones, as well as fact sheets and podcasts. Please see the web site at: http://www.epa.gov/cellphone/

Information for federal-owned cell phones

Examine your facility’s processes for managing handheld electronics. While small, and generally below the dollar threshold for some requirements, these products are electronics and must be handled in an environmentally responsible manner at end-of-life, in accordance with E.O. 13423. In addition to the EPA cell phone recycling web site above, more guidance is available at: http://www.federalelectronicschallenge.net/resources/eolmngt.htm
