National Water Trails System
The National Water Trails System (NWTS) is a distinctive national network of exemplary water trails that are cooperatively supported and sustained. Various local, state, and federal organizations have identified and developed numerous water trails over the years, and the NWTS serves to bring existing and newly identified water trails into one cohesive national network. Designated by either the Secretary of the Interior or Secretary of Agriculture, National Water Trails promote outdoor recreation along the river for local communities and improve collaboration between water resource managers.
