AGO's recreation work focuses on engaging all Americans in healthy and exciting active outdoor recreation. The Obama administration has made it clear that active recreation is a priority, through initiatives like Let's Move Outside. AGO is supporting these efforts by bringing together federal, state, and local government as well as grassroots organizations and industry powers. More information about the Federal Government's efforts on recreation and opportunities to get locally involved can be found on Recreation.Gov
Recognizing that outdoor recreation is a key component of our nation's economy, AGO actively works to promote recreation areas. In 2012, the Outdoor Industry Alliance found that Outdoor recreation supports of $646 billion in spending and over 6 million American jobs every year.
AGO is supporting recreation by:
1. Identifying outdoor recreation access and opportunities to improve public enjoyment of Federal lands, waters, and shorelines through collaboration with the Federal Interagency Council on Outdoor Recreation (FICOR)
2. Promoting better coordination and collaboration among Federal agencies, state and local partners, and non-profit organizations whose missions or programs include providing outdoor recreation and conserving natural and cultural resources
3. Providing online, up-to-date information and resources about federally supported outdoor recreation opportunities at Recreation.gov.
