Dr. Quenton R. Dokken is President and CEO of the Gulf of Mexico Foundation (GMF).He has been with the foundation since its inception in 1991; and, prior to the GMF position, Dr. Dokken was Associate Director of the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Center for Coastal Studies.While an adjunct professor at TMAUCC, Dr. Dokken directed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Gulf of Mexico Regional Marine Research Program.
As Executive Director of the Texas State Aquarium in 1985, Dr. Dokken directed the efforts to establish the newly formed nonprofit facility in Corpus Christi, Texas.With a full-time staff of 78 and more than 1,000 volunteers, he directed the Aquarium through its creation and first year when the $32 million facility opened its doors to over 700,000 visitors who came to view and marvel at the living wonders of the Gulf of Mexico.
As a marine scientist, Dr. Dokken has a publication record relating to the study of the ecosystems and fauna of the Gulf of Mexico.As Director of the Gulf of Mexico Regional Marine Research Program, he led his professional peers in developing priorities for marine research in the Gulf of Mexico.He founded and coordinated the Flower Garden Ocean Research Program which integrated the efforts of institutional science and the offshore oil and gas industry to expand opportunities for marine research in a collaborative effort.
Under Dr. Dokken's leadership the Foundation has grown from an idea to a reality serving a vital need for leadership and action in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.The Foundation's education programs have reached tens of thousands throughout the region and its habitat restoration programs have improved more than 15,000 acres of critical coastal habitat at more than 90 locations around the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.To bring those projects to life, volunteers have logged more than 50,000 hours of effort.
Dr. Dokken has more than 25 years of experience in volunteer program development, utilization, and management to facilitate marine education and marine environmental advocacy.Dr. Dokken has served as a member of the U. S. Department of Energy Ultra-deepwater Advisory Committee from 2007 to the present time. Under his direction, the Gulf of Mexico Foundation has been the recipient of numerous awards including NOAA's Marine Stewardship and Sustainability Award and the Environmental Protection Agency's Gulf Guardian Award.
