Melissa Koenigsberg is currently the Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks at the Department of the Interior. She has served in this capacity since March 2009. She works closely with the Secretary of the Interior, the Deputy Secretary, and the Directors of the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. During the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, she worked as part of the senior Interior team at the Unified Area Command in New Orleans, LA and in Washington, DC.
Koenigsberg has a particular focus on partner organizations and has been actively involved with the Trust for the National Mall, the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy, the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation, the National Park Foundation and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. She has been actively engaged in implementing President Obama's America's Great Outdoors initiative at the Department, working on the launch of the initiative and the White House Conference on America's Great Outdoors.
Prior to her service at Interior, Koenigsberg's primary focus was campaign fundraising and finance. She was the Chief Financial Officer and Finance Director for the Denver Host Committee for the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. In 2006 she served as the Finance Director for then Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley's successful gubernatorial race in Maryland.
Previously, Koenigsberg worked as Finance Director to then Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar during his successful 2004 U.S. Senate Campaign and then worked in his Senate office in Washington, DC on legislative issues. She served as a regional Finance Director during former North Carolina Senator John Edwards' 2004 bid for President. Koenigsberg worked on several other U.S. Senate races, including those of Senators Chuck Robb, Carl Levin and Max Cleland.
Koenigsberg is a native of West Bloomfield, Michigan and is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations. She is married and has one child.
